Topic:  How to Think About Financial Decisions

Presentation by David Grabiner
Coordinator of the Washington D.C. Bogleheads chapter
Q&A and discussion will follow presentation

Many financial decisions involve multiple considerations, such as risk, return, and several potential scenarios. Examples are the
decision whether to pay down a mortgage or invest, or when to claim
Social Security. You can often simplify the decision by choosing the
right comparison. Reduce the number of variables, such as a
comparison of two options with the same risk to make it easier to
compare potential value. Some decisions now reduce to simple
mathematics, but even when there are other factors (for example, your
lifespan when claiming Social Security), simplifying the comparison
makes it easier to weigh these considerations.

Topic: Upgrading to Windows 11

Special Presentation by Alan Baker

Q&A moderated discussion

There is a critical need to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 due to security vulnerabilities, as Microsoft will cease support for Windows 10 on October 14th, 2025. While Windows 11 offers similar functionality, its key advantage is ongoing security updates, protecting users from “bad guys” who exploit vulnerabilities in unsupported operating systems. Several upgrade pathways were discussed, ranging from straightforward in-place upgrades to more technical solutions for incompatible systems, as well as alternative operating systems and purchasing new hardware.

Retired from a senior information technology position at IBM, Alan enjoys helping nonprofits with their technology needs, volunteering for AARP, SIR and other worthy organizations.

The S&P 500 is down nearly 14% since January and lost 2.69% year over year.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has recently zoomed from 12-20 to a high of 47.
Predicting the future is hard… that’s why investing can be a Risky Business.

On Saturday, April 12, we discussed how to negotiate the morass and provided
recommendations to achieve a good financial outcome in the face of current
market conditions and deleterious macro economic factors.
